"Agnes watch those crates! We'll need those medical supplies hold 'em steady!"
Harker called from the helm, her fierce eyes taking in every movement of her crew. Many were loading barrels and bags others saying their good byes. It was her way that any man who had family should say goodbye even if they hated their family for it might be the last time they see them. Cassandra looked up at St. Kerverne and smiled in the knowledge that she wouldn't be seeing the likes of England for at least a year. Captain Cassandra Harker the only present female officer in the Kings Navy was to prove her worth in the Caribbean, a challenge she had long awaited.
The shouts of a royal arrival on the dock brought her eyes away from the Defender to the carriage laden with the seal of the Queen. Rolling her eyes Cassandra replaced her hat and made her way off the ship. When she reached the carriage the doors swung open and revealed the Queen and her Lady in Waiting a distant cousin of her mothers...one who had disowned Cassandra the moment she joined the Navy. Bowing to the Queen and nodding to Annette she spoke first.
"Your Majesty I had not expected you, the Defender is under way for our departure and is in no state to entertain royalty. I'm sorry-"
But she was interrupted and silenced herself immediately.
"Captain Harker...Cassandra I am here to wish you well on your commission to the Caribbean I hope all fairs well. Never before has I seen a woman of such nerve and confidence, and if I may say so a disapproval of the male dominance. And I have brought you a gift. Annette if you would."
Cassandra nodded and smiled as Annette produced a wood box. She was going to joke that for a coffin it was a little small but when it was opened she found herself staring at the most intricate and beautiful blade she had every seen. Reaching for the dagger she noted the detail and how it fit her hand. Looking at the Queen she stuttered.
"Your Majesty I...I'm honored"
Bowing low she heard the calls of her Lieutenant that all was ready. Cassandra raised the dagger between her eyes to salute her Queen she turned and headed for the gangway before turning around and removing her hat to bow again.
"Thank you Lady Annette perhaps when I return you will think better of me. Again Majesty your presence and gifts are most appreciated. I shall return victorious."
As she stepped unto the Defender her lieutenant shout out orders to weigh the anchor and kiss their land lives goodbye. Smiling she made her way to the prow the men following a ritual and stamping the deck with their feet as she passed. Looking out past England she saw the brief outline of Ireland and then the blue open waters of the Atlantic. She had primary orders to silence the pirate threat and secondary order to make sure the daughter of an English noble found no harm or trouble.
"Time to make you boys men, aim for the New World the Caribbean calls gents!"
